The Beautiful Dam of Yishun 🌊

The Yishun Dam has been one of my favourite haunts since the 90s. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, I remember seeing folks playing mahjong or having a BBQ along the stone pathway of the sea-facing bank. It was a lively and carefree spot, yet always retained its peaceful charm.
For those unfamiliar with Yishun Dam (formerly known as Sungei Seletar Dam), it is one of the most scenic spots in Singapore to watch a beautiful sunrise (on the sea-facing bank) or a picturesque sunset (on the reservoir-facing bank) 🌞. This 975-metre-long earth-filled dam offers an open, vast view that brings a sense of peace and tranquility—something rare in Singapore’s dense urban landscape.
Fishing and Crabbing at Low Tide 🎣🦀

The dam stretches between two points — Yishun and Seletar. Facing the Straits of Johor on the Yishun side, you’ll notice a discharge channel that periodically releases water from the Lower Seletar Reservoir into the sea, especially after heavy rains. There is a monitoring station at the reservoir-side of the dam. When the dam supervisor needs to discharge water into the sea, he would look out from the dam tower to see if there is anyone swimming or fishing nearby and blare out an announcement (for about 30-45 minutes) to advise the public to leave the waters as the currents from discharged water may endanger anyone in the waters.
There has been sightings of a crocodile in the waters in recent months. So, approach the waters with caution! .🙏

Evenings at the sea-facing bank bring low tides, revealing a soggy seabed dotted with smaller crustaceans. This is when fishing enthusiasts and crabbers step into the shallow waters, casting their nets or positioning their rods along the bank. It’s a scene reminiscent of simpler times—unhurried, undisturbed and peaceful.
However, to dispel any illusion about the water quality, it must be noted that the beach waters 🌊🌊 may not be the cleanest (certainly can't be compared with the pristine-clear waters you find in some of the exotic islands 🏝️in Southeast Asia) as it does contain urban litter, debris from nearby construction areas and possibly wastes from industrial plants across the straits.
The Charm of Simplicity ✨

Despite the passing decades, Yishun Dam has remained largely untouched by urban development. The unmaintained stone pathways, vast open sky, and golden sunset create an experience unlike any other in Singapore. It’s this raw, untouched charm that keeps drawing me back.

The open stretch of the dam is a paradise for nature lovers, joggers, cyclists, fishing enthusiasts, and photographers alike. Whether you are strolling, jogging, casting a fishing line, or simply unwinding by the water, frankly, the refreshing sea breeze really refreshes and rejuvenates you, especially in the colder months!
Note ℹ️: The pathways along Yishun Dam will soon be upgraded to part of the island-wide park connector network. Check out the exciting new plans here!

As Yishun Dam is located near Seletar Airport, it is always a awesome sight to see the planes up-close, as they descend to or ascend from the Seletar airport, which is a much smaller airport compared to the national Changi Airport in the eastern fringe of Singapore. You will be able to see posh private jets, single-propeller planes, and commercial twin propellers (flying to Malaysia).

Thus, flight-disturbing activities like flying kites, drones, or pointing lasers at aircraft are strictly forbidden. So, remember to abide by the rules to keep this spot safe for all.
Towards Seletar: Boats and Parks 🚤🌳

On the Seletar end of the dam, you’ll spot moored fishing boats bobbing in the water. Beyond the dam, the path leads to Seletar Aerospace Park and Rower’s Bay Park, a popular rest point for joggers and cyclists.

At the Rower's Bay Park, you will be immediately greeted with a lush "green" tunnel that promises great shimmering views of the Lower Seletar Reservoir at the end of the tunnel. You can stroll along the scenic boardwalks and catch some of the flora and fauna commonly found in the area.
The Reservoir Side: A Different Kind of Beauty 🏞️

From Rower's Bay Park, you can return along the reservoir banks of the dam. In contrast to the sea-facing bank’s dynamic ebb and flow, the reservoir-facing bank presents a picture of calm. Overlooking the buildings of Seletar Aerospace Park and the Orchid Country Club’s golf course, this side offers a peaceful, still-water view of the Lower Seletar Reservoir that soothes the soul.

A Place of Freedom and Serenity 🌄

Yishun Dam is truly a special place—where the vast open skies and rhythmic sea bring a sense of freedom, and the tranquil reservoir and golden sunsets calm the mind. Whether I’m jogging, strolling, or cycling, this hidden gem never fails to rejuvenate me.
If you’ve never been, I highly recommend adding Yishun Dam to your must-visit list. Who knows? It might just become your favourite retreat too. 😊
