Khatib Camp: A fixture in Yishun

Khatib Camp has long been a familiar part of the Yishun landscape — but like many things in land-scarce Singapore, it must now make way for new urban developments.
It’s a place I’ve known since my family moved to Yishun in 1984 — one I’ve often jogged around and grown familiar with over the years.
What does Khatib Camp do?
Khatib Camp has primarily served as a training facility for the Singapore Armed Forces, particularly the Singapore Artillery. The land on which it sat was previously used by the Royal Malaysian Navy in the 1970s and handed over to Singapore in 1982. From there, Khatib Camp was built in 1983, at a cost of S$90 million.
In other words, Khatib Camp is almost as 'old' as Yishun New Town.
As its land area of 29ha will be returned to the state for residential development, its units will be relocated to Amoy Quee Camp in Ang Mo Kio.
What will replace Khatib Camp?
In its place, we can look forward to new residential developments that will bring much-needed housing - an estimated 6,000 homes - to Yishun, alongside the adjacent 70ha Chencharu estate that is currently under development. The closest end of the land area occupied by Khatib camp is about 400m from Khatib MRT, while farthest end is about 1.2km away.
With Singapore’s ongoing population growth, the demand for homes is ever-increasing. The upcoming developments will not only provide new housing options but also include amenities like parks, retail spaces, and community centers that will enhance our quality of life. This means more spaces for families to gather, children to play, and neighbors to connect. 🌳🏙️
Embracing change while cherishing memories
Change is never easy, but it can bring new opportunities. While I’ll miss Khatib Camp and the familiar paths I used to jog along, it’s exciting to imagine the fresh beginnings taking shape in Yishun.
So, let’s hold onto the memories of Khatib Camp while welcoming a new chapter for Yishun! 🚀
