Yishun Pond - our version of the 'Shangri-la'

This is one of my favourite jogging haunts in the evening - the Yishun Pond Park.
The evening view is simply serene, with the picturesque reflection of the Khoo Tech Puat hospital building on the calm waters of the pond. If I could exaggerate a little, I would describe this view as the 'Shangri-la' of Yishun. No tourist should leave Yishun without taking an award-winning reflection shot of the Yishun Pond.
Here, you can also find some interesting fauna, such as the tawny coster butterflies, grey herons, collared kingfishers, and even playful otters. You probably need a little patience, a keen eye sight and a camera with quality zoom.

For tree lovers, you might be able to spot mangroves, Ashoka trees, handkerchief trees, star-fruit trees, mangosteen trees, and jackfruit trees.

As you pass by the Khoo Tech Puat hospital, you will also find a sculpture of a Farmer and his Buffalo. This sculpture pays tribute to the heritage of Nee Soon (another name of Yishun), where agriculture was the main economic activity during the early 1900s.

One of the park's highlights is the Spiral Tower, a 14.5-meter tall structure inspired by the lifecycle of a butterfly. Do walk along the man-made path that leads to the top of this unique cocoon-shaped tower. At the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Yishun Pond Park. You will also find an elevated bridge that connects the Yishun Pond to the Yishun Park across the road.

The Yishun Pond Park covers an area of 2.3 hectares and serves as both a recreational spot and a vital water catchment area or reservoir managed by the PUB or Public Utilities Board. Its water is also utilized for the irrigation system of the nearby Khoo Teck Puat hospital.

Type of Experience
Estimated time to experience and discover Yishun Pond Park: ~20-30 mins. A walk around the Yishun pond may take up 15-20 minutes and you may want to spend 10 minutes at the Spiral Tower to take in the scenic elevated views of the pond.
How You can get to the Yishun Pond Park
You can walk to the Yishun Pond from the Yishun MRT station and Northpoint Shopping Centre - it takes about 7 - 10 minutes at a leisurely pace. You can also take a public bus (bus numbers 103, 663, 812) from the Yishun Bus Interchange and alight at the bus stop opposite SAFRA Yishun.
I will recommend visiting in the cooler morning or evening where the rising or setting sun adds beauty to the scene and you can feel the Yishun Pond coming to life with people, animals and plants.
